Hazen outpaces Patriots in the pool, and other Liberty notes

Hazen High School was shrouded in darkness Thursday, Dec. 10.

A wind-caused power outage canceled classes, but the lights were back by 3 p.m., just in time for the school’s swim and dive team to host rival Liberty.

Shorthanded Issaquah swimmers edge Skyline

The Eagles had a figurative arm tied behind their backs as two of their better swimmers, Jason Klein and Kyle Millis, didn’t compete. Millis was out with the flu, while Klein was in Texas competing at the USA Swimming Junior Nationals. Read more

Skyline freshmen propel swim team to state title

A typical Skyline swim practice sounds like a fun, loud, boisterous affair.

As senior Kathy Lin described it, the Spartans’ bevy of talented freshmen brought a new spirit – and noise – to the program.

Patriots playoff roundup — Football advances to state

November 9, 2015

UPDATED — 9:51 a.m. Nov. 11, 2015

The Liberty football team defeated Renton, 35-20, to advance to the Class 2A state playoffs.

Liberty is the District 2/3 No. 4 seed. The unranked Patriots will travel to play No. 6 Hockinson, of Brush Prairie, in the first round Nov. 13 or 14. It is the Patriots’ first state appearance since 2010.

Liberty shutout Juanita, 5-0, Oct. 13. Katelyn Godfrey scored twice, while Kierra Costello, Kelli Anderson and Jordan Hemmen each had one goal. Goalkeepers Sydney Argosino and Jasmine Curl combined for the shutout. Read more

Girls soccer

The Liberty High School soccer team outscored opponents 8-1 last week, going 2-0 to improve its season record to 7-1-2.

Cameron Nelson scored twice in the Patriots 4-1 win over Sammamish Oct. 6. Makenna Carr and Sydney Abel each had one goal, while Jordan Hemmen picked up three assists and Sydney Willoughby had one.

Two days later, Kimee Chavez, Kalyn Gill, Maddy Mak and Hemmen scored in the Patriots’ 4-0 win over Lake Washington. Kelli Anderson, Abel and Willoughby each had one assist.

As of press time, Liberty was in second place in the Class 2A/3A KingCo Conference standings with 16 points. Mercer Island was in first with 18 points, while Bellevue was just behind Liberty with 15 points. Read more
