Patriots take third at state

Playing in their final game in a Liberty uniform, the Patriots seniors got to be the story Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Hemmen opened the scoring and Liberty beat Ellensburg, 2-1, to claim the 2A third-place trophy.

Sophomore Makenna Carr got the game-winner in the 75th minute, dribbling by two players and goalkeeper Jocelyn Egan to score. Read more

Issaquah girls capture 4A soccer championship

Madison Phan knew this was most likely her last chance.

Blinded by stadium lights, the Issaquah High School senior defender used her intuition and timing. Leaping high above a crowded goal mouth, Phan delivered her finest in the biggest moment with a header goal in stoppage time as Issaquah rallied for a 2-1 win over West Valley of Yakima in the Class 4A girls soccer state championship game Nov. 21 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. Squalicum beats Liberty to advance to state final

SHORELINE – The streaks remained intact, though not without a fight.

Sarah Hulbert scored the game-winner in the 37th minute and Squalicum beat Liberty 2-0 in the 2A state semifinals Friday at Shoreline Stadium. The defending 2A state-champion Storm (22-0) extended its winning streak to 30 games and has not lost in 46 matches, a run dating to 2013. Read more

Issaquah returns to soccer final four

The Issaquah High School girls soccer team advanced to its eighth semifinal appearance in the past 12 seasons, rallying to defeat the Curtis Vikings, 3-2, in a Class 4A girls soccer quarterfinal match Nov. 14 in University Place.

The Eagles will face the Camas Papermakers at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. The winner faces either Gonzaga Prep or West Valley (Yakima) in the championship match at 4 p.m. Nov. 21. The loser plays for third and fourth places at noon Nov. 21.

Issaquah (15-2-2), which is seeking the program’s fourth state title since 2004, took a 1-0 lead on Curtis in the fourth minute when Tori Lawless scored off Alina Ruzicka’s pass.

The Vikings evened the score in the 20th minute as Ellie Reardon’s free kick found the head of Sariah Keister. They grabbed the lead eight minutes into the second half when Morgan Weaver scored her 35th goal of the season. Read more

Liberty advances to soccer semifinals

The Liberty High School soccer team is back in the semifinals.

Liberty defeated Burlington-Edison, 4-1, Nov. 13 to advance. Katelyn Godfrey scored twice, while Makenna Carr and Amanda Hemmen each added one goal.

The Patriots next play Squalicum, the defending Class 2A state champions, 8 p.m. Nov. 20. If Liberty wins, the Patriots play in the title game 4 p.m. Nov. 21, if they lose, they will play for third place at noon Nov. 21. All games are at Shoreline Stadium.

Football loses to Hockinson

A 42-21 loss to Hockinson ended Liberty’s season Nov. 14.

The Patriots kept it close through the first quarter, which ended in a 7-7 tie. But Hockinson went on to score 28 unanswered points through the next two quarters.

Liberty outscored Hockinson 14-7 in the fourth quarter, but the game was mostly out of reach at that point.

It was the Liberty football team’s first state appearance since 2010.

Volleyball makes early exit

The Liberty volleyball team did not make it past the first day of the Class 2A state tournament in Lacey. Losses to Ridgefield and Othello ended the Patriots season Nov. 13.

Liberty soccer advances to semifinals

The Liberty High School soccer team is back in the semifinals.

Liberty defeated Burlington-Edison, 4-1, Friday to advance. Katelyn Godfrey scored twice, while Makenna Carr and Amanda Hemmen each added one goal.

The Patriots will next play the winner of Black Hills/Squalicum 8 p.m. Nov. 20 at Shoreline Stadium.

Liberty soccer hosts Burlington-Edison Nov. 13

NEW — 3 p.m. Nov. 12, 2015

The Liberty High School soccer team will host Burlington-Edison in the state quarterfinals this Friday.

The Patriots advanced after defeating Sammamish, 5-0, in first-round action Nov. 10. Cameron Nelson, Kayln Gill, Jordan Hemmen, Sydney Abel and Maddy Mak all scored for Liberty.

The game begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Liberty High School. View the state bracket here.

Girls soccer: Issaquah, Skyline win state-playoff openers

The Issaquah girls soccer team had to go on the road to open the Class 4A state playoffs, due to consecutive losses to rival Skyline. But it didn’t take long for the Eagles to make themselves at home at Everett Memorial Stadium. Read more

Patriots playoff roundup — Football advances to state

November 9, 2015

UPDATED — 9:51 a.m. Nov. 11, 2015

The Liberty football team defeated Renton, 35-20, to advance to the Class 2A state playoffs.

Liberty is the District 2/3 No. 4 seed. The unranked Patriots will travel to play No. 6 Hockinson, of Brush Prairie, in the first round Nov. 13 or 14. It is the Patriots’ first state appearance since 2010.
