Patriots’ best team in school history eyes state title

After a 2012 campaign that yielded zero wins, Alex Wilsey, then a Liberty High School freshman, didn’t see much hope in the Patriots’ boys golf team’s future.

“We never really succeeded at all,” said Wilsey, now a senior. “We didn’t go into matches believing that we would win. We were simply outmatched and outperformed every time.” Read more

Girls soccer

The Liberty High School soccer team outscored opponents 8-1 last week, going 2-0 to improve its season record to 7-1-2.

Cameron Nelson scored twice in the Patriots 4-1 win over Sammamish Oct. 6. Makenna Carr and Sydney Abel each had one goal, while Jordan Hemmen picked up three assists and Sydney Willoughby had one.

Two days later, Kimee Chavez, Kalyn Gill, Maddy Mak and Hemmen scored in the Patriots’ 4-0 win over Lake Washington. Kelli Anderson, Abel and Willoughby each had one assist.

As of press time, Liberty was in second place in the Class 2A/3A KingCo Conference standings with 16 points. Mercer Island was in first with 18 points, while Bellevue was just behind Liberty with 15 points. Read more

Girls soccer

The Liberty High School girls soccer team dropped its first match of the season Oct. 1, falling to an undefeated Mercer Island squad, 1-0.

Earlier in the week, the Patriots defeated Bellevue, 2-0. Freshman Cameron Nelson scored in the 23rd minute, assisted by Maddy Mak. Sophomore Makenna Carr added an unassisted goal in the 59th minute. Goalkeepers Sydney Argosino and Jasmine Curl combined for the shutout.

As of press time, Liberty’s 3-1-1 Class 3A/2A KingCo Conference record, good for 10 points, had the Patriots in third place behind league-leading Mercer Island and Bellevue. Read more

The Liberty High School girls swimming and diving team won 11 of 12 events at its meet against rival Hazen on Sept. 22.

The Liberty football team improved to 3-0 on the season with its 38-27 come-from-behind win over Interlake Sept. 18.

After heading into halftime down 20-10, the Patriots outscored Interlake 18-7 in the second half to clinch their first league win of the year.

Liberty next hosts Lake Washington 7 p.m. Sept. 25. Read more

State golf roundup — Zach Overstreet wins 4A golf title

June 3, 2015

Issaquah

Issaquah High School golfer Zach Overstreet claimed the Class 4A boys title in thrilling fashion, winning a three-way playoff at Spokane’s Qualchan Creek Golf Course on May 28.

Overstreet bested Snohomish’s Ethan Castro and Skyline’s Chris Mogg on the third playoff hole to secure the victory.

Liberty baseball team makes state’s final four and other notes

Something special is brewing on the Liberty baseball diamond.

The Patriots are in the state’s final four, after a weekend in which they eliminated Tumwater and then North Kitsap at Centralia’s Wheeler Field May 23.

Nate Steffens threw a complete game shutout, while Torey Anderson collected three hits to propel the Patriots to a 3-0 win over Tumwater. The Thunderbirds came into the contest with a 16-6 record and consistently found themselves in the top 10 of state rankings.

Liberty continued to stun spectators with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over North Kitsap. Read more

Patriots capitalize on Eagles’ injury-plagued girls golfers

District foes Liberty and Issaquah met on Renton’s Maplewood Golf Course for a nonleague contest April 2, and it was the Patriots who emerged victorious.

Four Patriots sign on National Letter of Intent day

February 10, 2015

Four Liberty High School students will officially continue their athletic careers at the next level.

Soccer players Morgan Childs, Kelley Johnson, Michael Duvall, and golfer Dexter Simonds all made their commitments official on signing day Feb. 4.
